Tesla Cybercab faces NHTSA audit and emergency response concerns

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an audit query into Tesla’s self-certification of its driverless Cybercab. The investigation follows the commercial deployment of paid rides in Austin, Texas. The audit focuses on whether the vehicle, which lacks a steering wheel, pedals, and mirrors, complies with existing Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards designed for traditional vehicles.

Simultaneously, emergency responders in Austin have raised concerns regarding the vehicle's lack of manual controls. The Austin Fire Department noted that moving a stalled Cybercab during an emergency could be difficult, as Tesla’s guidance suggests using an onboard touchscreen or remote assistance from Tesla staff. Fire officials expressed concern that factors such as gloves, sweat, or power loss could render the touchscreen unresponsive, potentially obstructing emergency vehicles during crises.
