Tesla Cybercab faces NHTSA investigation and market decline
Tesla's new autonomous vehicle, the Cybercab, is facing immediate regulatory scrutiny and market volatility following its unveiling in Austin, Texas. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an investigation on September 3 into Tesla's self-certification process. The probe focuses on whether the company's technical data and procedures correctly justify the vehicle's lack of traditional manual controls, such as a steering wheel, brake pedal, accelerator, and rearview mirrors.
Following the announcement, Tesla's stock price fell 5.92%, erasing approximately $880.5 billion in market value. This decline occurred despite a previous surge driven by the Cybercab's debut.
In a separate technological development, Tesla announced that the Cybercab is equipped with a new drive motor that does not utilize rare earth metals. This motor is reportedly 18% smaller in volume and 25% lighter than existing high-performance units. The move toward rare-earth-free components is seen as a strategic effort to mitigate supply chain risks associated with the concentrated global production of these materials.
