Tesla drivers fined in B.C. for allegedly sleeping while driving
The BC Highway Patrol has reported two separate incidents involving Tesla drivers allegedly sleeping while operating their vehicles on Highway 1 in British Columbia.
In one instance, a driver was stopped near Langley on August 27 after an officer observed the vehicle moving with the driver's eyes closed and hands off the steering wheel. The driver was fined $368 for driving without due care and attention, along with $81 for failing to produce a license.
In a second incident occurring on August 11 near North Vancouver, a 45-year-old driver from Maple Ridge was ticketed after witnesses reported seeing a Tesla driver asleep behind the wheel. The driver was issued a $368 ticket for driving without due care and attention.
Sgt. Michael McLaughlin of the BC Highway Patrol emphasized that driver inattention is a major factor in deadly collisions and stated that police will not debate the merits of self-driving technology with drivers, noting that staying alert is a legal requirement in BC.
