Tesla ends Swedish labor strike via worker buyouts

Tesla has effectively ended Sweden’s longest modern labor strike by offering severance packages to all remaining striking workers. The Swedish union IF Metall announced it will call off the walkout on August 19, after enough mechanics accepted buyout offers that left the union with no remaining members to represent.

The dispute, which lasted 1,021 days, began on October 27, 2023, when approximately 130 mechanics demanded that Tesla sign a collective agreement. While Tesla avoided signing the agreement, the company absorbed significant logistical challenges during the conflict, including port blockades in Denmark, Norway, and Finland, as well as refusals from postal services and electricians to assist with Tesla operations.

By refusing to sign a collective agreement, Tesla maintained its labor model, which the company views as essential for its long-term flexibility. Although the direct cost of the buyouts is considered small relative to Tesla’s revenue, the prolonged conflict coincided with a 67% drop in Swedish vehicle registrations.
