Tesla expands Cybercab robotaxi fleet in Texas

Tesla is expanding its Cybercab robotaxi fleet in Austin, Texas, with the number of vehicles authorized for commercial use increasing from 45 at the September 3 launch to 169 as of recent records from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

Footage has surfaced showing a driverless Cybercab arriving at a public Supercharger without a driver, suggesting a model where a single employee could manage the charging of multiple autonomous vehicles. While Tesla is developing dedicated chargers for its robotaxi fleet, these clips indicate that public stations are currently being used for unsupervised charging.

The Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle designed without a steering wheel, pedals, or mirrors, relying entirely on camera-based autonomous technology. Despite the rapid fleet growth, the service has faced practical challenges, including passenger reports of incorrect pickup locations and long wait times. Additionally, the rollout is under federal scrutiny as the NHTSA investigates whether the vehicles meet required safety standards.
