Tesla expands Powershare home backup to Model 3 and Model Y

Tesla Energy has announced that Powershare Home Backup is now available for new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles when paired with a Powerwall 3. This feature allows these vehicles to serve as home backup batteries, extending backup power by over two days in the event of a grid outage.

Previously, the Cybertruck was the only Tesla model capable of sending power back into a home. For compatible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the U.S. or Puerto Rico on or after October 1, 2026, the capability is enabled via an inverter called the PCS2 Lite.

On the residential side, homes equipped with a Powerwall 3 and a compatible Wall Connector require no additional hardware, as the integration is managed through a software update. When the grid fails, the Powerwall and the vehicle work in tandem to provide up to 11.52 kW of continuous power.
