Tesla expands Robotaxi hours in Austin amid nighttime safety challenges

Tesla is gradually expanding the operating hours of its Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, increasing the nightly limit from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Elon Musk stated that the primary technical challenge preventing 24-hour operation is the difficulty of detecting pets in low-light conditions, specifically describing the struggle to identify “grey kittens on grey tarmac in the dark.”

While Tesla relies on camera-based vision and AI-assisted photon count analysis to navigate, competitors like Waymo utilize LiDAR technology, which uses laser pulses to scan environments. This distinction is significant as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently investigating Tesla’s camera systems to determine if they are sufficient for spotting road hazards in poor visibility.

Despite the expansion, Tesla faces significant hurdles. The Cybercab service has reported mixed user experiences, including long wait times and technical issues with doors and drop-off locations. Additionally, Tesla is facing intense competition from Waymo, which currently maintains a much larger fleet of autonomous vehicles across numerous U.S. markets.
