Tesla Fremont plant proposes significant increase in particulate emissions
Tesla is planning a significant increase in emissions at its Fremont, California factory, according to reports regarding applications filed with the Bay Area Air District. The proposed changes involve modifying limits on two aluminum melting furnaces and adding equipment to reduce nitrogen oxides.
Local residents and parents at Lila Bringhurst Elementary School, located less than 1,000 feet from the plant, have raised concerns after discovering that total suspended particulate (TSP) emissions could increase thirteenfold. While some of this increase may consist of larger, less harmful dust, reports indicate the emissions could include toxic metals such as arsenic, beryllium, and cadmium.
Parents have criticized the Bay Area Air District for what they describe as an obfuscating notification process. Many families only learned of the potential spike through an anonymous Substack post rather than direct communication. A petition to extend the public comment period has gathered over 1,000 signatures. The plant is currently under investigation by the district regarding allegedly inaccurate emissions reports.
