Tesla FSD licensing offer remains without takers
Elon Musk has confirmed that no rival automakers have accepted Tesla’s long-standing offer to license its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. Despite Musk expressing optimism about potential deals in previous years, he recently indicated on X that there are currently zero takers for the technology.
Industry analysts, including Gary Black of The Future Fund, suggest that legacy automakers are unlikely to adopt the software. Black argues that developing unsupervised autonomy is “table stakes” for remaining competitive in the automotive industry, implying that manufacturers will prioritize building their own proprietary driving stacks rather than relying on Tesla’s.
While Tesla successfully established its North American Charging Standard (NACS) as a de facto industry norm, experts note that FSD represents a different challenge. Unlike a charging connector, FSD would serve as the “central nervous system” of a vehicle, involving significant brand and liability risks for competitors.
