Tesla integrates ByteDance’s Doubao AI into vehicles in China
Tesla has begun rolling out a software update in mainland China that integrates ByteDance’s Doubao large language model into its vehicle infotainment systems. This update, version 2026.14.13, applies to Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles.
This marks the first time Tesla has utilized a third-party large language model for in-car AI duties in any market. The Doubao-powered system replaces the previous voice assistant, offering more natural, proactive, and fluid interactions. Capabilities include controlling vehicle functions like climate and navigation, as well as conversational features such as storytelling, role-playing, and English language practice. The model supports up to 18 Chinese dialects, addressing regional language needs.
The move is seen as a way to navigate China’s specific regulatory landscape regarding data handling and AI deployment. By partnering with ByteDance’s Volcano Engine cloud unit, Tesla has implemented a locally compliant AI layer rather than using its Grok-based assistant found in other global markets.
