Tesla Cybercab launch triggers NHTSA safety audit

Tesla has launched its autonomous Cybercab robotaxi service in limited areas of Austin, Texas, following a closed-door launch event. The two-seater vehicle is designed without a steering wheel, pedals, or rearview mirrors, relying instead on a vision-based system of cameras and artificial intelligence.

Following the deployment, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an audit query to investigate Tesla's self-certification process. The agency is examining the technical data used to determine if up to 1,000 Cybercabs comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, specifically regarding the absence of manual controls. Unlike competitors such as Amazon's Zoox, which sought formal exemptions, Tesla proceeded with self-certification, arguing that existing standards do not apply to its design.

Tesla's stock fell approximately 6% following the news of the federal investigation and investor concerns regarding production timelines, pricing, and regulatory hurdles. The Cybercab features butterfly doors, an electronic brake-by-wire system, and a 22-inch touchscreen capable of supporting external gaming consoles like PlayStation and Xbox.
