Tesla launches Cybercab robotaxi service in Austin

Tesla has officially launched its Cybercab, a purpose-built autonomous two-seater robotaxi, into commercial service in Austin, Texas. The vehicle is designed without a steering wheel, pedals, or traditional side mirrors, relying instead on a camera-based vision system and artificial intelligence. While Tesla has begun mass production in the United States, the rollout has drawn attention from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which has initiated an audit of approximately 1,000 Cybercabs.

In Austin, the Cybercab has joined Tesla’s existing autonomous fleet, which previously relied on Model Y vehicles. Early commercial data shows that high demand has occasionally driven Cybercab fares above those of Uber and the Model Y Robotaxi. Technical specifications reveal the use of 'brake-by-wire' technology, which replaces traditional hydraulic systems with electromecannical actuators to reduce complexity and cost.

Tesla is also expanding its international presence, announcing a 'Cybercab Japan Tour' scheduled for September 2026, which will showcase the vehicle in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. The company faces significant competition in the autonomous ride-hailing sector from established players like Waymo, which currently operates a much larger fleet across multiple U.S. cities.
