Tesla Model Y achieves record low life-cycle emissions in Green NCAP assessment

The Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive has achieved a life-cycle greenhouse gas emission score of 95 g CO2-eq/km, the lowest figure published by Green NCAP to date. The Berlin-manufactured SUV earned a maximum five-star sustainability rating and an overall score of 93%, including a perfect 10/10 in the greenhouse gases category.

Green NCAP noted that Tesla provided verified vehicle and battery manufacturing data for expert review rather than relying on generic assumptions. This data allowed the vehicle to clear the 110 g CO2-eq/km threshold required for full points in the greenhouse gas section. Testing highlighted strong energy efficiency, effective regenerative braking, and efficient cabin heating via a heat pump in cold weather, though the model lacks bidirectional charging capabilities.

In the same assessment, the BYD Dolphin Surf scored higher overall with 96% and five stars, noted for its low weight and bidirectional V2L charging. Other vehicles tested included the Suzuki e Vitara, which received 87% and four and a half stars.
