Tesla Model Y outperforms Rivian R2 in Edmunds electric SUV test
Edmunds conducted a head-to-head comparison between the Rivian R2 and the Tesla Model Y to determine which small electric SUV offers better value. The Rivian R2, starting at approximately $45,000, serves as a more affordable entry point compared to Rivian’s higher-priced R1 series.
In terms of performance, the Tesla Model Y outperformed the R2 in range testing. While the R2 Performance model covered 304 miles in real-world testing—falling short of its 330-mile EPA estimate—the Model Y exceeded its estimates, with the rear-wheel-drive base model covering 337 miles and the three-row Model Y L reaching 358 miles.
Both vehicles utilize the North American Charging Standard (NACS), providing access to the Tesla Supercharger network. Testing confirmed that the Tesla Model Y charges slightly faster than the R2. Both vehicles feature advanced technology, including driver aids, large touchscreens, and Google-based navigation.
