Tesla Optimus cost estimate and UBTECH launch highlight surge in humanoid robot development

Tesla’s Optimus Gen 2 humanoid robot is estimated by Morgan Stanley to have a bill‑of‑materials cost of about $55,000, with locomotion components—primarily the legs—accounting for roughly $21,000 (38.6 %). Meanwhile, Chinese robotics firm UBTECH, under its consumer brand UWORLD, has opened pre‑orders for a full‑size “hyper‑bionic” humanoid companion on JD.com. The robot is offered in male (183 cm, 42 kg) and female (168 cm, 35 kg) versions, each with 88 degrees of freedom, Wi‑Fi, and a 2‑4 hour battery life. Over 1,200 reservations were placed within three days, with a 3,000 yuan deposit required and deliveries slated for mid‑September. The launch is positioned as a mass‑market emotional companion for users seeking social interaction.

Both announcements underscore a rapid push toward commercial humanoid robots, highlighting high production costs on one side and emerging consumer‑focused offerings on the other.
