Tesla secures $30 billion in credit to fund AI and Optimus robot production

Tesla is aggressively scaling its humanoid robot, Optimus, while securing massive financial backing for its AI and robotics ambitions. The company has established three new credit facilities totaling $30 billion, including a $20 billion delayed-draw term loan with Citibank and revolving credit lines with Wells Fargo. This capital is intended to support significant upcoming expenditures, which are expected to exceed $25 billion in 2026, covering AI infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing, and Optimus production.

On the production front, Tesla is ramping up Optimus manufacturing, aiming to reach a capacity of 1,000 robots per week by the end of 2026. While production has already increased to several hundred units per week, the company faces significant technical and social hurdles. Mechanically, the robot's hands are complex, requiring the manual assembly of over 100 components, and the company is exploring replaceable sensor gloves to improve durability.

Furthermore, Tesla is working to improve the robot's AI capabilities through imitation learning, having already collected over 500,000 hours of training data. However, this process has met resistance from employees in Texas and California, who have refused to wear motion-capture gear due to fears that the data being collected will eventually be used to automate their own jobs. In response, Tesla has begun utilizing specialized training teams and dedicated data collection centers.
