Tesla patents ‘Electric Fan Car’ technology for active downforce

Tesla has been granted a U.S. patent for an ‘Electric Fan Car’ system designed to enhance aerodynamic downforce and reduce drag. The technology utilizes four electric ducted fans positioned within the rear diffuser. These fans draw air from an underbody inlet and expel it through the rear, creating a ‘suction region’ or low-pressure area beneath the vehicle. Unlike traditional passive aerodynamic components that require high speeds to be effective, this active system can generate downforce at lower speeds, potentially improving cornering and braking stability.

The patent, which features a Model S in its technical drawings, arrives as Tesla prepares for a public demonstration of its next-generation Roadster. The highly anticipated event, originally scheduled for early October, has been postponed to October 15 due to forecasted severe weather in Texas. While the patent does not guarantee the technology will be included in production models, it has fueled speculation that it may be used to achieve the extreme performance targets promised for the new Roadster.
