Tesla prepares Cybercab robotaxi launch in Austin

Tesla is preparing for the imminent launch of its Cybercab, a purpose-built autonomous robotaxi, in Austin, Texas. The vehicle is notable for its lack of a steering wheel and pedals, relying entirely on autonomous software. The company's internal target for the rollout is the end of August 2026, with an initial phase involving Tesla employees operating the vehicles on public roads before the service is opened to the general public.

To support this expansion, Tesla is building an 80-stall wireless charging station in Austin and has conducted emergency response training with local authorities. The company is also hosting a sweepstakes for current Robotaxi users to win invitations to the official launch event.

However, the rollout faces scrutiny following recent incidents. An unsupervised Tesla Model Y robotaxi in Austin was filmed driving through a row of flexible plastic bollards after failing to navigate a closed-off lane. Additionally, data from the Robotaxi Tracker indicates that Tesla has significantly increased its unsupervised fleet in Austin, Dallas, and Houston. While Tesla claims its AI4 hardware is sufficient for unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD), the company continues to face questions regarding the reliability of its software in complex urban environments.
