Tesla prepares Cybercab robotaxi launch in Austin, Texas

Tesla is preparing to launch its Cybercab, a purpose-built autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals, in Austin, Texas, as early as August. According to reports from The Information, the rollout will begin with offering rides to Tesla employees on public roads before the vehicles are integrated into the company’s commercial robotaxi service.

Tesla has been conducting extensive preparations, including test drives, employee rides on private roads, and training sessions with local first responders to ensure emergency preparedness. The production version of the Cybercab has already been undergoing testing on public roads in Austin since June. Newer models are expected to feature integrated Starlink hardware to provide high-speed internet connectivity for passengers.

While Tesla moves toward commercial deployment, the company faces regulatory scrutiny and skepticism from analysts. In Nevada, regulators approved only 10 vehicles after Tesla requested 5,000, requiring appropriate human supervision. Additionally, some experts question the safety of unsupervised autonomy, noting that Tesla’s existing Full Self-Driving software still requires driver attention. Despite these challenges, recent NHTSA data indicated that Tesla’s Model Y robotaxi fleet recorded zero crashes between mid-June and mid-July.
