Tesla recalls 20,000 vehicles over headlight brightness

Tesla is recalling 20,349 vehicles in the United States due to low-beam headlights that may exceed federal brightness limits. The recall affects 18,735 Model Y vehicles produced between 2020 and 2023, and 1,614 Model 3 vehicles produced between 2017 and 2023.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that the excessive brightness in certain zones of the headlight beam could glare and reduce visibility for other road users, increasing the risk of collisions. The issue involves specific headlight assemblies supplied by Marelli Automotive Lighting, particularly those with a manufacturing date of June 2, 2023, or later.

Tesla had previously petitioned the NHTSA to classify the defect as “inconsequential,” but the regulator denied the request. While Tesla has frequently used over-the-air software updates for other recalls, a finalized remedy for this hardware-related issue has not yet been determined. Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by mail.
