Tesla recalls vehicles over headlight safety as AI driver monitoring emerges
Tesla is recalling 20,349 vehicles in the United States due to safety concerns regarding headlight brightness. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determined that certain Model 3 and Model Y headlights may emit light exceeding permitted levels, potentially blinding oncoming drivers and increasing accident risks. While Tesla previously argued the brightness did not pose a significant safety risk, the NHTSA has mandated the recall. A definitive fix, whether via software or hardware, has not yet been established.
In related automotive safety developments, the American company Nauto has developed artificial intelligence technology designed to combat distracted driving. The system uses camera-based monitoring to detect if a driver is using a mobile phone, showing signs of fatigue, or looking away from the road. Unlike traditional monitoring, Nauto’s AI can identify these behaviors even if the driver is wearing sunglasses or a hat, providing verbal alerts to encourage safer driving habits.
