Tesla and robotaxi operators receive Nevada permits for Clark County

The Nevada Transportation Authority has unanimously approved operating permits for up to 8,000 robotaxis in Clark County, including Las Vegas. The authorization allows Tesla to deploy up to 5,000 vehicles, while Waymo and Uber have been granted permits for up to 1,000 vehicles each. These permits are initially valid for 12 months and are subject to various safety and administrative requirements.

Tesla plans to launch its autonomous ride-hailing service in Nevada using Model Y vehicles initially, before transitioning to its dedicated two-passenger Cybercab, which lacks a steering wheel and pedals. Tesla has scheduled an exclusive event in Austin, Texas, for September 3 to celebrate the launch of the Cybercab. Elon Musk has previously stated that the company aims to sell the Cybercab to private individuals for under $30,000.

In terms of accessibility, testimony at the Nevada hearing highlighted that the Cybercab includes integrated Braille features and is designed to accommodate wheelchair users more easily than current ride-hailing options. While Tesla has a high ceiling for deployment, company engineers indicated that reaching the full 5,000-vehicle limit within the first year may be challenging due to logistical and infrastructure requirements.
