Tesla robotaxi expansion stalls amid modest mileage growth

Tesla’s robotaxi initiative has not progressed as originally promised. Paid robotaxi miles remained flat at roughly 900,000 in Q2, matching Q1, and service has been limited to the outskirts of a few cities—Dallas, Houston, Miami, Tampa and Orlando—with an active unsupervised fleet of about 21 vehicles across Austin, Dallas, Tampa and Orlando.

During the Q2 earnings call, Vice President of AI Ashok Elluswamy said, “First of all, I’d like to state that the Robotaxi program has been operating extremely well… we have driven more than 380,000 miles of unsupervised Robotaxi… zero notable incidents.” The company highlighted this safety record and its camera‑only approach as validation of its autonomous‑driving strategy, even as broader roll‑out remains slow and controlled.
