Tesla sales surge in Europe amid Chinese EV expansion

Tesla experienced a significant 72.5% increase in vehicle registrations in Europe during September, reaching 68,776 units compared to the previous year. This growth follows a modest 4% increase in August, a period typically impacted by summer holidays.

The surge occurs as the European automotive landscape shifts toward electric and hybrid vehicles. While traditional European manufacturers like Volkswagen and Renault reported sales declines of 2.9% and 0.7% respectively, Chinese electric vehicle makers saw substantial growth. BYD registrations rose by 99% to 49,953 units, while Seres saw a nearly 24% increase, and Leapmotor recorded more than a fourfold growth.

Global competition remains intense, with Chinese companies capturing approximately 60% of global electric vehicle sales and three-quarters of production as of 2025. While some analysts debate whether Western companies are ceding market share to China, others view the technological competition—highlighted by Tesla’s Roadster announcement—as a driver for innovation rather than a zero-sum game.
