Tesla strike in Sweden ends after 1,021 days
The Swedish union IF Metall has announced the end of its nearly three-year industrial conflict with Tesla, effective August 19. The dispute, which began on October 27, 2023, over the company’s refusal to sign a collective bargaining agreement, lasted 1,021 days, making it one of the longest industrial actions in modern Swedish history.
The conflict concluded after Tesla reportedly bought out the remaining striking union members, estimated at approximately 80 workers, providing severance packages to end their employment. IF Metall officials criticized the move, stating that Tesla chose to pay employees to leave rather than provide secure conditions through a collective agreement. Union representatives described the company’s tactics as unprecedented in the Swedish labor market.
Despite the prolonged strike and various sympathy actions from other unions—which impacted sectors such as postal services, ports, and electricity distribution—Tesla maintained its operations. The company has asserted that its existing pay and benefits meet or exceed Swedish standards. With the cessation of industrial action, Tesla can now proceed with expanding its charging network, including the activation of over 250 new charging stations across 20 locations in Sweden.
