Tesla to expand Japan delivery network by 60% amid sales surge

Tesla is expanding its Japanese delivery network by 60% in 2026 to address a significant surge in demand. The company plans to increase its locations from seven to 11, adding sites in Yokohama, Kobe, greater Tokyo, and Nagoya.

Sales in Japan have seen rapid growth, with approximately 12,000 vehicles sold in the first half of 2026 alone, surpassing the total sales for the entire year of 2025. This growth is attributed to adjustments in Japan’s national electric vehicle subsidy structure introduced in January, alongside a Tesla promotional campaign offering three years of free fast-charging.

Tesla Japan President Richi Hashimoto noted that the surge in demand caused a temporary imbalance between supply and demand. To manage operations, the company has increased its import capacity by utilizing both Daikoku Wharf in Yokohama and Mikawa Port in Aichi prefecture. The expansion focuses on delivery infrastructure rather than showrooms, as the company maintains a model where purchases are handled online and vehicles are collected at dedicated centers or delivered to homes.
