Tesla to launch Cybercab robotaxi in Austin next week

Tesla is preparing for the official launch of its Cybercab, a two-seat autonomous vehicle, with an event scheduled for next Thursday in Austin, Texas. Production of the vehicle is already underway at Giga Texas.

To assist passengers in identifying their specific vehicle in a crowded autonomous fleet, Tesla has implemented a feature where the front LED light strips can project different colors. This personalized lighting will correspond to a color assigned to the user via the Tesla app.

The rollout faces scrutiny regarding Tesla’s reliance on camera-based navigation. While Elon Musk maintains that cameras are sufficient for autonomy, competitors like Waymo argue that sensor redundancy, including lidar and radar, is essential for safety at scale. While Tesla has expanded its unsupervised fleet and operating hours, its robotaxi business currently trails Waymo, which performs hundreds of thousands of autonomous rides weekly.
