Tesla expands Cybercab robotaxi showcases and US operations

Tesla is expanding the global presence and operational testing of its Cybercab, a two-seater autonomous robotaxi designed without a steering wheel or pedals. The vehicle has recently been showcased in Tokyo and is scheduled for static exhibitions in Beijing and Shanghai later this month. An undercover unit was also spotted in Sydney, Australia, suggesting upcoming regional showcases.

In the United States, Tesla has begun deploying the Cybercab for ride-hailing services in cities including Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, and parts of the San Francisco Bay Area. While the company is encouraging interest in fleet ownership, critics have raised concerns regarding the economic risks for individual owners and the potential for Tesla to retain most software margins.

Operational challenges have also emerged. In Austin, riders reported significant delays because the current autonomous system avoids highways and railroad crossings, forcing vehicles onto longer surface-street routes. Additionally, the NHTSA has opened an investigation into the Cybercab to ensure the vehicle meets safety standards despite the absence of traditional controls like steering wheels and mirrors.
