Tesla Wins UK Supreme Court Ruling on 5G Patent Licence

Tesla secured a legal victory in the United Kingdom Supreme Court, reviving its bid to obtain a fair, reasonable and non‑discriminatory (FRAND) licence for 5G patents needed for its upcoming 5G‑enabled vehicles.

The automaker had sued U.S. technology firm InterDigital and patent‑licensing platform Avanci over the terms of a licence covering patents owned by multiple holders. After earlier rulings at the High Court and Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court ruled that patent owners remain obligated to licence on FRAND terms even when their patents are included in a pool, allowing Tesla’s claim to proceed. The case is expected to return to the High Court for further proceedings.
