Tesla Q2 2026 earnings: record deliveries, profit miss, AI spend

Tesla reported its second‑quarter 2026 results on July 23. The company delivered a record 480,126 vehicles, a 25 % year‑on‑year increase, and generated $28.2 billion in revenue, up 26 % driven by strong automotive sales and growth in its energy‑storage business. However, adjusted earnings came in at $0.33 per share, well below analysts’ consensus of $0.51, and the gross margin slipped to about 16‑17 %. Operating expenses surged, with capital spending reaching roughly $5.8 billion, chiefly for artificial‑intelligence, robotaxi, Optimus humanoid‑robot and Cybercab projects. Free cash flow turned negative at $‑1.1 billion, marking the first cash‑burn year in more than two years, while Tesla announced a $25 billion capex target for 2026. The mixed results sent the shares down 4 % in after‑hours trading. Analysts highlighted the record deliveries and revenue beat but warned that the widening AI investment and profit shortfall could pressure margins and valuation.
