Testosterone levels and replacement therapy linked to atrial fibrillation risk

A recent review published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society has investigated the relationship between serum testosterone levels, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), and the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF).

While historical data primarily linked low testosterone levels to an increased risk of AF, particularly in men aged 80 and older, newer research suggests a more complex picture. Emerging evidence indicates that both low and high testosterone levels, as well as the use of TRT, may be associated with a higher risk of heart rhythm irregularities.

Researchers noted that clinical trial results remain inconsistent, and further studies are required to confirm these associations. Given that atrial fibrillation is more prevalent in men and carries significant morbidity and healthcare costs, understanding these hormonal links is considered vital for managing cardiovascular health and reducing the burden on healthcare systems.
