Tether and Kazakhstan explore tenge-pegged stablecoin

Tether has signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Bank of Kazakhstan and the Alatau City Authority to explore the creation of a stablecoin pegged to the Kazakhstani tenge. The agreement focuses on studying international issuance models, reserve management, and potential domestic use cases for a blockchain-based version of the national currency.

In addition to the stablecoin exploration, the partnership aims to develop a framework for the tokenization of real-world assets. The parties intend to identify suitable assets for tokenization and may launch a pilot project in Alatau City utilizing Tether’s Hadron platform.

The initiative aligns with Kazakhstan’s broader digital asset strategy, which includes regulatory frameworks for money-backed stablecoins and tokenized assets. This follows a previous pilot in September 2025 that involved the exchange Intebix, Solana, Mastercard, and Eurasian Bank.
