Tether expands footprint through agribusiness, gold, and US Treasuries

Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, is aggressively diversifying its holdings and expanding its influence beyond digital assets into physical commodities, government debt, and real estate. The company has acquired a controlling interest of approximately 70 percent in the South American agribusiness firm Adecoagro, representing a total investment exceeding $700 million. This move signals a strategy to build positions in real assets such as agriculture, renewable energy, and food production.

In addition to its agricultural ventures, Tether is positioning itself as a major player in global financial markets. The company is amassing significant reserves of gold and Bitcoin, with CEO Paolo Ardoino targeting approximately 10-15 percent of the investment portfolio for gold and 10 percent for Bitcoin. Tether has reportedly accumulated between 83,000 and 100,000 BTC.

Furthermore, Tether has become a substantial purchaser of US government debt. With over $122 billion in direct holdings, the company has ranked among the top foreign buyers of US Treasury bills. Tether aims to become a top five purchaser of US Treasuries, leveraging the massive cash flows generated from the yield on its reserves to fund its expanding global footprint.
