Tether expands gold reserves to 146 tonnes as US remains top sovereign gold holder

Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, increased its gold holdings by 14 tonnes in Q2 2026, bringing its total private gold reserves to 146 tonnes valued at about $19 billion. The addition represents roughly 10% of Tether’s $187.8 billion reserve portfolio and makes the firm one of the largest private gold owners outside of governments and central banks.

Separately, the World Gold Council data confirms that the United States continues to hold the world’s largest official gold reserve at 8,133.5 metric tons, far ahead of the next biggest holders such as Germany, Italy, France, Russia, China and India. The U.S. gold stock accounts for about 83% of its total foreign‑exchange reserves, underscoring the strategic role of gold in national financial stability.
