Tether USAT Stablecoin Launches on Celo Blockchain
Tether's US-focused USAT stablecoin has been deployed on the Celo network, marking its second mainnet launch after Ethereum. The token now supports native mint‑and‑burn functions and can be used to pay Celo gas fees via the platform’s CIP‑64 fee‑abstraction upgrade. USAT, which reached a market capitalization of about $185 million since its January debut, benefits from Celo’s large user base—Celo handles roughly 28% of cross‑chain USDT transfers and saw 67% user growth in Q2 2026.
Tether US CEO Bo Hines said the expansion was a “deliberate decision” to tap a network where digital dollars are already widely used. The rollout also links USAT to MiniPay, a stablecoin wallet with over 18 million global users, potentially broadening the token’s reach for payments, savings and remittances.
