Tether's USDT faces regulatory pressure in Europe and the US
Regulatory pressure on Tether's USDT is intensifying in both Europe and the United States. In the European Union, the implementation of the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation has led platforms like Revolut to announce the delisting of USDT for European users. Despite these restrictions, data from Artemis Analytics suggests that the regulatory squeeze has not yet triggered a significant migration of USDT supply or demand to other chains or venues.
In the United States, new proposed rules under the Treasury Department's GENIUS Act could follow a similar path. Analysts suggest that if the rules are enacted, US exchanges such as Coinbase might be forced to delist Tether to comply with requirements that foreign-issued stablecoin issuers must adhere to US lawful orders and reciprocal arrangements. These provisions are slated to take effect on January 18, 2027.
While regulated access is tightening in developed markets, demand for dollar-pegged stablecoins remains high in emerging economies. In Argentina, the platform Lemon reported a 60% increase in total volume for 2025, reaching $9.3 billion, as users increasingly utilize stablecoins for payments and cross-border transfers.
