Tether's XAUT Gold Token Secures Shariah Certification for Islamic Finance

Tether's gold‑backed digital token XAUT has been granted Shariah certification by Amanah Advisors, led by Mufti Faraz Adam. The certification confirms that each XAUT token, representing one troy ounce of physical gold stored in Swiss vaults, complies with Islamic finance principles, including full asset backing, the absence of interest, leverage and speculative derivatives.

The approval opens the token to Islamic banks, institutions and individual investors seeking Shariah‑compliant exposure to physical gold. Tether expects broader adoption across markets where Islamic finance is prevalent, such as the Gulf Cooperation Council, South Asia and parts of Africa. As of March 31, XAUT was backed by more than 707,000 troy ounces of gold worth over $3.3 billion, with its on‑chain value rising from about $700 million in July 2025 to roughly $2.5 billion.

Earlier, the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) had designated XAUT as an Accepted Spot Commodity, strengthening its regulatory standing in the United Arab Emirates. The Shariah certification is viewed as a key step toward integrating tokenised real‑world assets into the Islamic finance ecosystem.
