Tetovo citizens face rising costs amid consumer basket dispute
Residents in Tetovo are expressing growing desperation over rising food prices, noting that their ability to purchase basic goods has significantly diminished.
There is a notable discrepancy between government and union data regarding the cost of living. According to the Ministry of Economy and Labor, a family of four required 58,475 denars for monthly expenses in August, with 21,132 denars allocated to food and drink. This represents a 3.7 percent increase compared to January.
In contrast, the Federation of Trade Unions of Macedonia reports a much higher minimum consumer basket, stating it exceeded 68,000 denars in August and rose to 69,432 denars in September. The union notes that for families living in rented accommodation, monthly expenses can reach as high as 84,807 denars.
Minister of Economy and Labor Besar Durmishi has criticized the union's calculations, suggesting their figures represent a ‘desired basket’ rather than a minimum necessity and characterizing their approach as a political campaign.
