Tetovo fighters protest street renaming proposal
The Association of Fighters in Tetovo has protested a proposal by a municipal working group to rename streets in the city, accusing the group of attempting to rehabilitate fascist figures.
The Association claims the working group, established by the Tetovo Municipality Council, has proposed 219 names using inaccurate or incomplete biographies to hide the past of certain individuals. Specifically, the group disputes the biography of Yusuf Rexhepi, a doctor and professor. While the working group presents him as a prominent figure, the Association asserts that Rexhepi was involved in the Italian fascist counter-intelligence service (OVRA) at age 17 and later served as an officer in the fascist Albanian battalion Ljuboten in 1943.
In response to these accusations, working group member Olivera Gičenko stated that the group conducts a vetting process to ensure only names that do not oppose the constitutional order of the Republic of Macedonia are accepted.
