Tetovo hospital birth reveals woman recorded as deceased since 2006

A legal investigation is underway in North Macedonia after a 27-year-old woman, identified as A. S., gave birth at the Tetovo Clinical Hospital in December 2025, only for registry officials to discover she has been recorded as deceased since October 2006.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the discrepancy was identified during the registration process for the newborn girl. Official death records indicate the woman supposedly died in Skopje in 2006, which would have made her only seven years old at the time of the recorded death.

On February 12, 2026, A. S. appeared at the Center for Social Work with the infant and an unidentified male, but failed to provide any identification documents. The public prosecutor has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine if the situation is a result of a major institutional error in the civil registry or a deliberate case of document falsification and identity misuse.
