Tetovo Municipality faces accusations of hidden debt
The Democratic Union for Integration (BDI) Tetovo branch has accused the Mayor of Tetovo of concealing the true extent of the municipality's debt. Arbëresha Neziri of BDI claims that while Ministry of Finance data for the second quarter of 2026 reported obligations of approximately 23 million euros, there are an additional 8 million euros in undeclared debt, bringing the total estimated debt to over 31 million euros.
BDI has raised questions regarding how approximately 20 million euros were reportedly settled within a two-month period and requested evidence of these payments. The municipality's 2026 base budget is 16.9 million euros, with 55% realized by mid-year, including funds from a Hungarian loan.
Tetovo Mayor Bilall Kasami previously addressed the debt, stating that while initial debts of 15 million euros rose to 20 million euros due to penalty interest, the municipality has successfully reduced the debt owed to bailiffs to approximately 3 million euros. Kasami expressed intentions to settle this remaining amount within the next few months to achieve financial liquidity.
