Tetovo street renaming process faces ethnic representation disputes

The Commission for Street Naming in Tetovo is preparing a final list of proposed names to be submitted to the Municipal Council in September, with the goal of then sending the list to the Government for final approval.

The Democratic Union for Integration (BDI) has criticized the commission's process, claiming the current proposals do not reflect the city's ethnic reality. According to BDI Tetovo Vice President Amet Qazimi, of the 74 names proposed so far, 47% are Albanian, 24% are Macedonian, and 29% are international or universal names.

Qazimi further alleged that proposals from BDI and other opposition parties were rejected, and that the list fails to include names previously annulled by the Constitutional Court. The court had previously overturned several street naming decisions due to procedural failures regarding government approval.
