Tetra Pak launches paper-based packaging for canned tuna

Tetra Pak has introduced Tetra Recart, the first paper-based packaging solution designed for canned tuna, aiming to challenge the long-standing dominance of metal cans in the industry.

Developed in collaboration with the Spanish company Jealsa, the new packaging was first launched in Sweden through the retailer Axfood in a 200ml mini format. The solution is designed to be scalable and cost-competitive, with plans to expand to other tuna preparations as the category evolves.

The rectangular, flat-surface design offers several logistical advantages, including more efficient storage, better shelf space utilization, and increased surface area for brand communication. It is also optimized for e-commerce, specifically for pick-and-pack operations and meal kits.

Environmentally, the company claims the packaging has the lowest carbon footprint in its category, potentially saving 21,000 tons of CO2 for every million cans produced. This innovation arrives as the global canned tuna market is projected to grow by approximately 12%, reaching 12.4 billion units by 2030.
