Tevere Viaduct: Controlled demolition of 13 spans begins in Orte
On Sunday, October 11, the controlled demolition of the first 13 spans of the Tevere Viaduct on the SS 675 Umbro-Laziale highway near Orte was successfully completed. The operation, managed by Nitrex Explosives Engineering, involved detonating charges to allow the vertical fall of the deck sections while minimizing stress on the existing piers and shoulders.
The demolition is a critical phase of a major renovation and seismic upgrading project for the 1,353-meter infrastructure. With a total investment exceeding 41.5 million euros, the project aims to replace the current deck with a new steel and concrete structure equipped with an isolation system to improve earthquake resilience. While the deck is being replaced, the existing supporting structures will be reinforced and maintained.
