Texas alcohol laws vary by county and municipality

Texas maintains complex and varying alcohol regulations that differ significantly by county and municipality. Under the oversight of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC), many regions have historically operated as “dry” counties, where the sale of alcohol was prohibited, or restricted to only beer and wine rather than liquor.

Local ordinances also create discrepancies in service hours. For example, in Tyler, bars and restaurants may serve alcohol until midnight from Sunday through Friday and until 1 a.m. on Saturdays. In contrast, Longview allows service until 2 a.m. every night. In some areas, such as certain precincts in Longview, liquor sales are permitted while others remain restricted.
