Texas A&M Forest Service promotes lithium-ion battery safety

The Texas A&M Forest Service is promoting safe lithium-ion battery charging practices during Fire Prevention Week, observed from October 4 to 10. This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on the importance of the safe use, charging, and storage of batteries to prevent wildfires.

To support local efforts, the agency provided 50 wildfire prevention outreach boxes to eligible volunteer fire departments. These boxes contain educational resources designed to help departments engage with residents through community events and school visits.

Officials noted that damaged batteries or unsafe charging can lead to thermal runaway, an uncontrolled reaction that causes overheating, ignition, or explosions. With nine out of ten wildfires in Texas being human-caused, the agency emphasizes that practicing battery safety is critical as residents increase outdoor activities like hunting and camping during the fall season.
