Texas A&M study links coffee consumption to healthier aging
Research from Texas A&M University, published in the journal Nutrients, suggests a biological link between coffee consumption and healthier aging. Scientists identified that compounds in brewed coffee can activate NR4A1, a receptor involved in stress response, inflammation, metabolism, and tissue repair.
Researchers noted that small molecules in coffee, such as caffeic, chlorogenic, and ferulic acids, act like “keys” to the NR4A1 “lock.” Once bound, these molecules can regulate gene expression in the cell nucleus, potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases associated with aging.
Beyond cellular aging, daily coffee consumption is linked to increased alertness and improved physical performance. Experts suggest that up to 400mg of caffeine per day—roughly four cups—is a suitable amount for many adults to gain health benefits, including improved focus and enhanced endurance during aerobic and anaerobic exercise.
