Texas midterm elections see competitive Senate and gubernatorial races

As early voting begins for the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, Texas has emerged as a critical battleground. Democrats are seeking to break over three decades of Republican dominance in the state, focusing on issues such as the cost of living and healthcare access.

In the race for the U.S. Senate, Democratic state Representative James Talarico holds a narrow lead in several polls against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton. A University of Houston survey placed Talarico at 48% to Paxton’s 46%, while a University of Texas poll showed Talarico leading 50% to 47%. Conversely, some polling suggests the candidates are tied.

The gubernatorial contest is also expected to be highly competitive, featuring incumbent Greg Abbott seeking a fourth term against Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa. Democrats are specifically targeting independent voters and Hispanic communities to secure a breakthrough.
