Texas Capitol Complex on high alert following powdery mailings
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has placed personnel at the Texas Capitol Complex on elevated alert following a series of suspicious mailings containing unknown powdery substances. DPS Capitol Region Chief Ralph E. Ohland issued a directive to lawmakers and legislative staff to remain vigilant and immediately report any unusual packages or correspondence.
The security measures extend to district offices throughout the state, where staff have been advised to contact regional DPS offices or local police if suspicious items arrive. Specialized teams are prepared to isolate and respond to potential chemical or biological threats.
Federal agencies, including the FBI and the United States Postal Inspection Service, are investigating the coordinated mailings, which have targeted election administrators and secretaries of state across multiple jurisdictions. Notably, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz reported that his Houston office received a package containing white powder on October 16, prompting an emergency response. While several high-profile offices have encountered these items, officials have indicated that none of the intercepted substances have tested positive for a dangerous agent.
