Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute joins first U.S. pulsed field ablation trial

The Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute (TCAI) at St. David's Medical Center has become the first facility in the United States to participate in a clinical trial for a next-generation mapping and pulsed field ablation system. The trial aims to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of this technology in treating patients with paroxysmal and persistent atrial fibrillation.

Dr. Andrea Natale, the executive medical director of TCAI and the global principal investigator for the trial, performed the first procedure. Unlike traditional ablation methods that utilize extreme heat or cold to destroy heart tissue, this novel catheter system employs electric fields. This approach is designed to reduce the risk of damage to surrounding cardiac structures.

The system is integrated with advanced 3D cardiac mapping technology, allowing physicians to visualize the heart's electrical activity and the catheter's position and contact with tissue both before and after energy delivery.
